Trilliant: Empowering the Smart Grid

What we do
Trilliant provides intelligent network solutions and software to utilities for advanced metering, demand response, and Smart Grid management. With more than twenty years experience solving meter communications needs, our company focuses on the adoption of open standards-based technologies for electric, gas, and water utilities. Our advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solutions enable utilities to develop time-of-use (TOU) metering and demand response programs, transforming the traditional customer-utility relationship through interval based consumption data and 2-way messaging. Also these solutions are used by utilities to drive down operational costs and improve customer satisfaction through much improved awareness and data on distribution system performance. Our Energy Services meet the needs of electric and natural gas utilities with meter reading services, utility data profiling, and online presentment. We have secured contracts for more than three million meters to be supported by network solutions and services. Our history
Trilliant has been delivering advanced metering solutions on standards-compliant infrastructure longer than any company in the industry. For over two decades we have helped the entire industry, including partners and competitors, develop standards-compliant advanced meter communications. See our client map.

1985
Nertec Inc is formed, and develops the first interval communications devices for telephone-connected communications. Following the release of the telephone-based communication devices, the Company releases SerView™ Communications Server, a platform for the automation of meter communications, data collection, and management.

1993
Nertec is the first to market with a "Multi-Utility" (Electric-Water-Gas) AMR device followed by other pioneering developments including the first battery free phone-line-powered AMR device supporting gas and water meters. The Company's first wireless Cellemetry product is developed in partnership with BellSouth.

2000
Nertec develops TableTstBench™ Software Platform, the industry's first ANSI development, simulation, and compliance software platform. Today virtually every major meter manufacturer as well as most AMI and networking companies use TstBench software to develop and test ANSI meters and meter communications products use this platform. Also customer meter shops and compliance labs use the product.

2004
A group of leading energy principals drawn from several major energy-related automation companies form Trilliant Networks, Inc, and acquire the assets of Nertec Inc to commercialize standards-based solutions. Quickly Trilliant Networks builds upon the legacy of Nertec by delivering the industries first "underglass" standards-compliant advanced meter communications products for commercial electric meters and advanced gas meter instruments, a suite of meter communications products supporting all major digital cellular networks in North America. And while the Company continues to advance the capabilities of its own AMR software, these underglass solutions are the first to be compatible with Itron's MV-90 (the industry-dominant data acquisition system.)

2005
Milton Hydro, using Trilliant Networks AMI technology and a hosted service based on SerViewCom® AMI Communications Server Software, becomes the first utility in Ontario to begin residential billing based on Time-of-Use rates as mandated by the Ontario Energy Board.

2006
Trilliant Networks launches the industry's first mass market (residential) AMI mesh network solution based on IEEE 802.15.4 wireless standard enabling a new open standards and cost effective approach to 2-way communications for residential customers. Installed in Ontario, this system passes the OUSM (Ontario Unified Smart Meter) certification requirements.

2006
Trilliant Networks begins a 1.3m meter deployment with Hydro One, Ontario's largest energy company following extensive evaluations and testing which had lasted well over a year from initial selection.

2007
Trilliant Networks becomes the first AMI company to support integrated demand response (i.e. load control) of thermostats and other loads such as pool pumps and water heaters. Also this solution is the first to enable "in-home" consumer displays that control loads, display meter readings and utility messages.

2007
Trilliant Networks merges operations with OZZ Energy Services, forming Trilliant Incorporated, providing utilities with comprehensive solutions and services supporting advance metering, demand response, and grid management programs.

2008
Trilliant continues to pioneer market leading, open standards compliant solutions for utility customers as the market demands ever-greater capability, flexibility, and freedom of choice.
